The Magic of Space…

The one thing I love about Science Fiction is that it is a world you must create from scratch, and you can make up a broad array of magical devices that are awe inspiring. It’s why I love the fantasy genre too. As a young girl, one of my favorite books was about a blue cube where you could make endless wishes. It’s this childlike dream of being able to live in a magical world that makes Science Fiction so interesting to me. Who wouldn’t want to travel the galaxy in a space ship full of buttons that can take you anywhere, create holographic images and cook up gourmet meals at a moment’s notice? And what if these meals could fool the tastebuds with no caloric content but tons of flavor? This is my mind at play. I just adore the endless possibilities!

I finished reviewing my husband’s Sci Fi pilot. It’s about as long as a feature and there are several characters and fantastical situations. It was a fun editing experience to go through this new world and write in my own elements. I pumped up the action, raised the stakes and fleshed out the themes for the main character. It’s also based in a reflection of reality. You can see the threads of historical situations stitched through out the episode.

When I had my twins, I entered a whole new world. One where I couldn’t leave my house at the drop of a hat, where my kids were so dependent on me, where my every moment was to live just for them. My husband and I turned to Star Trek at night to blow off the stress of being new parents of twins. It worked! We fell in love with the series, the characters, the situations. It was a small respite from the stressful realities of the real world, a fantasy where we could get lost for a moment and find some peace. It’s a timeless show, and it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with the Sci Fi genre. In a world where anything is possible, you can always find joy.
