The Cinematic Look, We Got It…

I love my new Blackmagic 4K camera. I love because the image is so dense and rich. After looking through the footage of Catharsis tonight, I realize just how big of a jump we made. We came from the Canon 7D which is a good camera, but nothing like this. On Catharsis, we used a Canon 5D Mark II as the 2nd cam. This was the camera we also used on Harley as the 2nd cam. It’s a strong camera that looks really good, but compare it to the Blackmagic and you can see the difference.

The Blackmagic has that cinematic feel. It’s absolutely beautiful! You can really see it from the images below.

Don’t get me wrong, we have incredible footage from both cameras, but it’s hard to beat 4K and the sensor on the Blackmagic. These stills are all from the Canon 5D Mark II.

Ironically, Blackmagic just added RAW to update the software while we were shooting Catharsis, so we couldn’t test run RAW on this short. We will on the next one. RAW eats a ton of space, but has a huge dynamic range and is perfect for green screen. Here are a few more shots from Catharsis all shot on the Blackmagic.
