Fully 3-D Render…

This morning I pitched a feature idea to my husband that could be shot relatively soon entirely on a green screen stage. He liked the idea, even though post would take a significant amount of time to complete because it would require a full background composite on most shots, as well as many 3-D environment builds. We would need several terabytes of storage, a compositing suite, a matte painter and access to a render farm.  The film happens in space, and since Brad has been working on both The Sphere and just wrapped as Visual Effects Editor on Cosmos, he has a lot of experience comping space shots. This is definitely his area of expertise, and something I could see us executing well.  He built this shot of Mercury today after I pitched the project to him.

Mercury

This is a fully 3-D shot which means you can see the model from any angle and rotate through it. In other words, you could have a ship fly through the atmosphere, and it would look real. Brad designed this shot in about an hour. That is completely awesome!

We have so much on our plate at the moment. Finishing The Sphere is priority number one. It’s so effects heavy and the quality is so gorgeous that it looks like it’s out of Star Wars! Playground is also on the list of almost ready projects to push out. We need a bit of ADR, plus some music. After that, we tackle Catharsis and see just how well the Blackmagic handled production. From the shots I’ve seen, I’m happy with it. It does drink light quite a bit more than the Canon 7D, but there’s no grainy noise in the dark which is really nice.

I’ve also contacted several sponsors today for my feature Lone Viking. This is the sweet romantic comedy with a relatively low budget. We could shoot it ourselves, and Brad could comp all the effects shots that take us through time. There are so many projects we’re juggling that it’s hard to keep up. We have several shorts in the works too. I want to shoot them all, but we’ll have to wait for the right time. The parts are meaty and the stories so interesting. I know they would just sing!
