Finding that Balance…
I love my short film Fay. Women love it too. I need feedback from men, so I have it out to a writer friend from CBS now who I know will give me his honest opinion. I really want the next film I produce to appeal to everyone which means finding a balance.
With Rome 444, that balance was easy to establish. It was in a time of war, and I wrote some really gory battle scenes. It’s definitely geared to men, but it also has this incredible love story between the leads that balances the film just right. I submitted that script to a screenwriting competition this week along with Fay.
When I write something as sweet and poignant as Fay, I feel the need to write something more mysterious and dark, which is what I did last night. It’s a serial killer feature that I’ve been writing on the side from time to time. It’s really captivating with high suspense, a cast of interesting cops and characters, and a vicious killer that’s pure evil. I want my husband to love our next short as much as I do, so the next short we do will need to be balanced between the two of us.
I have so many ideas waiting to be written, but one jumps out at me because it’s five characters in a room with enormous stakes. It’s high drama that has mass appeal because of the broad range of characters. Also the fact that it’s a one location shoot keeps costs down and makes it more of a character driven piece which are my favorite stories. 12 ANGRY MEN is one of my favorite movies of all time, and it’s 12 guys arguing in a room. I’m also nuts for Hitchcock flicks, especially REAR WINDOW which happens in one room looking out at an apartment complex. It doesn’t take me long to write a script once I’m inspired, and this one excites me.
I’m also meeting with John Ruskin from the Ruskin School of Acting next week. I will most likely sign up for their day classes beginning in December, but they also have a theatre where the writers and actors write and perform content day of for an audience. They were glad to hear I was a writer/producer/director because they have opportunities outside of acting. Though I think in terms of film when it comes to my screenwriting, having a variety of platforms is smart. Honestly just being around actors and artsy types like me makes me happy, so I’m looking forward to it.
