Behind the Viewfinder…

When it comes to my DSLR Cannon 7D, I can get a really beautiful image, but I grew up with an eye piece on all my cameras and that makes the camera feel like an extension of you. I love that feeling as a filmmaker because I can capture the subject effortlessly. Sony has always been my brand of choice since I picked up my first video camera at the age of 10. By that point I already loved taking pictures on my Fischer Price blue camera I got for Christmas at 7. It’s where I get my constant need to pick up a camera and capture a cute moment from my twins or a memory with my husband. I love filming things and feeling as if the camera is a piece of me.

With the Canon 7D there is a Zacuto attachment that gives you an eye piece, but it doesn’t feel like an organic piece of the gear cause it’s not. The camera I am currently researching is the NEX-FS700 with a 4K Super 35mm sensor that makes the footage look incredible.

I’m thinking about renting it for my next project to see if I like the feel.

There are so many good choices for cameras now. We could go with two Blackmagic pocket cameras or just rent cams for our shoots to check out the multitude of cameras on the market and always get the latest model. Of course with every new camera comes a new learning curve, which is why paying a DP with his own gear and a top notch reel is a great way to go.

Still, I love being behind the camera because I can make sure I capture the look I want for the film. Of course as a director I work closely with the DP to ensure they have the picture framed in my style, but it’s still not the same as shooting it yourself. CES is coming up and then NAB in March, so now is not the time to buy a camera anyway since the price will drop soon.
