Independence Day…

July 1, 2014

After having a business meeting tonight, I realize we are swamped with projects. It’s hard to believe we are already into July! Playground is in the finishing stages and was put on hold as we developed effects for The Sphere. We need a new graphics card to render out all the effects because they are so […]

Start a Fire

June 28, 2014

Here is my initial title treatment for “Catharsis”. This is a full 3D fluid sim I built and rendered in Cinema 4D. The lighting and smoke effect is created via a Volumetric Light Shader and Noise pattern. There is no Comping or Depth effect added yet, so expect an enhanced look once the movie is […]

The Cinematic Look, We Got It…

June 27, 2014

I love my new Blackmagic 4K camera. I love because the image is so dense and rich. After looking through the footage of Catharsis tonight, I realize just how big of a jump we made. We came from the Canon 7D which is a good camera, but nothing like this. On Catharsis, we used a […]

Focus… In Focus

June 27, 2014

If you have ever shot with a DSLR, or any other handheld small-form camera, you are intimately aware of the difficulty of the rack focus. Thoughts on the Blackmagic Production Camera

June 26, 2014

After having shot my first project with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera- also know as the Blackmagic 4K (BMPC), my initial thoughts are very positive. The images are dense, rich, and the dynamic range (12 stops!) is going to come in handy when it is time to color correct. Keep in mind it is still […]

Catharsis Day One…

June 24, 2014

We had a busy day on set, and I am uber happy with the results.  The footage looks incredible, and we gathered lots of coverage for safety. Our makeup guy  David Mendez did an excellent job with Victoria Levine‘s  (Danielle) makeup. Brad and I swapped on camera and sound and were very happy with the results. Kellan Rhude plays […]

The Future of Film…

June 23, 2014

We start shooting Catharsis tomorrow morning, and plan to wrap on Tuesday. This will be our first short on our Blackmagic 4K camera, and I am eager to get into production with the new gear. I can’t wait to share the results with everyone too.  We will be color correcting it on Resolve which is […]

The Sphere Coming to a Neighborhood Near You…

June 21, 2014

Brad designed this effect for The Sphere as it descends over the neighborhood. The 3-D designer in the film (played by Bea Schreiber) must think of a way to shoot it back into outer space and save the world. It’s an awesome looking shot created in aftereffects using the video copilot element plugin. I’ll […]
