High Concept…
When revising my features, I have one rule in mind and that’s to clarify everything. When my high concept twist occurs, the surprise needs to be easy to follow with the foreshadowing and clues adding up at the end to create a powerful moment for the viewer. This is an extremely difficult feat as a writer to do successfully. You see it in films such as The Sixth Sense, strong stories with believable twists that you don’t see coming.
In film school we studied everything from classics to contemporary films, but there is always more to learn about the language of Hollywood movies. Studying scripts and movies from great filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino, etc… is extremely beneficial for those with long term career goals in this industry.
