Romance…

I’ve been a fan of romance novels since I was 11 and read my first novel in about twenty-four hours. I just couldn’t put it down, and I still have that first book. It’s called Snowfire by Heather Graham Pozzessere. It was about a Playwright, Justin Magnasun, who was falsely accused of murdering his wife and decided to live up in the snowy mountains away from everyone when a reporter comes knocking. Kristin Kennedy claims to be stranded but is actually there to get the scoop of a lifetime. She never expected to lose her heart in the process to a man she suspects is a coldblooded killer.

This novel started a fire in me for romantic stories and dark mysteries. I still love those two subjects today and that translates into the films I write and produce.  I love heroes – men who are larger than life with type A personalities and a need to rescue those who are less fortunate. Which brings me to the victim. There has to be one in the story. The person who inspires the hero to act, to make hard choices, and to do what is right. These are the type of stories that stick with me and make my heart sing.

In this way, I’ve come to love superhero stories, and this past weekend came up with one of my own that would translate well into a feature, comics, and merchandising. It’s one of my many ideas that I have tucked away. The list is over 300 now, and the ideas keep popping up like firecrackers constantly going off in my brain. Many of the ideas are dark, some are romantic, others are fun web series that I may kick off soon. I usually write in the voice of a strong man or a smart bookish woman. I love investigators, scientists, and superheroes.

The feature I am writing now is the courtroom crime drama featuring a woman lawyer. It’s not a romance per se, though there is a thread of that in the story as well. I’m hesitant to delve into the details because I don’t want to give anything away. It’s just too good. I really want to make this one, but it is not a micro-budget feature. It’s going to take some major hustling to make it a reality. I’m on page 97 of the script that will likely run 128 pages.
