Good Entertainment You Don’t Want to Miss…
Everybody has their favorite genre or subject when it comes to film. These are the ones that get you to spend the high prices at the theatre. Once you have kids, going to the theatre becomes a bigger ordeal, so it really takes the promise of a great film to get you there. Science fiction stories make the top of my list. I’m also a big fan of mythology and historical films. I love epic movies in the theatre. Seeing the effects on the big screen is worth the price of admission, but there’s no longer a need to spend big bucks at the theatre if you have one at home. Home theater systems with 3-D screens and surround sound, make going to the theater unnecessary.
Good entertainment at home comes in many forms, and often times, film is beaten out by TV. There are some excellent television shows out there with incredible writing and amazing special effects. Many of these shows have already aired and can be watched all at once on Netflix. I watched Buffy and Angel after the fact and all of the Star Treks. Even though Star Trek The Next Generation shot in the 80s and early 90s, it doesn’t feel like it because it’s all about the future. It’s still an incredible show! With all the new shows out there and the old, there’s such a large selection to choose from, and if you got three-dimensional characters and a good story, special effects is just icing on the cake.
As I watch content, be it features or TV shows, I do so with an eye, not just for entertainment, but for story. The story points are universal and follow a specific structure. As a viewer, you tend to ignore this, which means the writer did their job, but as a writer, studying these story points is critical for success. Even after reading all the books, of which there are several, learning about good story is done best by watching successful shows and features.
