The Books You Can’t Put Down…

You know when you read a really good book– the ones that you just can’t put down. The type of book that keeps you up late struggling to keep your eyes open so you can just read one more paragraph. Those are the books that usually get made into movies. Sometimes the film is exceptional, more times than not, the book was better than the movie. This was not the case with two films that I love…Brokeback Mountain and Rain. Both films were based on books that didn’t have much heart compared to the beautiful films they were turned into. It’s been a good while since  I’ve read a book that really stuck with me and made me eager to turn the page but not for lack of trying. I’ve searched…. I’ve started many… I’ve felt the disappointment of never getting hooked. What to do? I decided to revisit an old favorite and voila, I can’t put it down…and because it’s been so long since I last read it, it’s like a new book.

Reading is important for writers. Not only does it improve your vocabulary, but it exercises your brain in a different way from writing that ends up helping your own work in the end.  Often times when I am writing a script, I have the urge to write it in book form as well. As the writer on a script, you do not communicate the character’s feelings like you do as an author of a book. Instead, the actor’s job is to derive the character and develop it from the script. As a director, I work with the actors on this, but I prefer delving into my characters’ heads and revealing their internal monologues on the page as well as in person for the shoot.
